<h1>Overview of Multi BCF</h1>

<p>Multi Base Station Control Function (<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04982#id04982" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04982#id04982');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">BCF</a>)
is application software that allows combining several BTSs into one logical
cell. This enables operators to increase the capacity of a cell, while maintaining
maximum spectral efficiency. Multi BCF increases the Nokia Talk-family and
Nokia MetroSite <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id03816#id03816" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id03816#id03816');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">BTS</a> cell capacity to 24 TRXs, and the
Nokia UltraSite BTS cell capacity to 36 TRXs, while requiring no extra Broadcast
Control Channel (<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04445#id04445" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04445#id04445');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">BCCH</a>).</p>

<p>The Base Station Controller (<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04439#id04439" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04439#id04439');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">BSC</a>)
supports the Multi BCF for Nokia Talk-family BTS, Nokia UltraSite BTS, and
Nokia MetroSite BTSs.</p>

<p>The BSC allows the following BTS site type combinations
in a Multi BCF cell:</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Nokia Talk-family + Nokia MetroSite</p>
</li>
<li><p>Nokia MetroSite + Nokia MetroSite (maximum 3 MetroSite BTSs in
the chain)</p>
</li>
<li><p>Nokia Talk-family + Nokia Talk-family
(maximum 6 Talk-family BTSs in the chain)</p>
</li>
<li><p>Nokia Talk-family + Nokia UltraSite</p>
</li>
<li><p>Nokia UltraSite + Nokia UltraSite (maximum
9 UltraSite BTSs in the chain)</p>
</li>
</ul>

<a name="nov2221442247" shape="rect"></a>
<dl class="note-notification">
<dt class="note-caption">Note</dt>
<dd><p>Nokia UltraSite cannot be followed by Talk-family BTS in
the chain. Nokia MetroSite cannot be followed by any other BTS generation.</p>

<p>Nokia UltraSite and Nokia MetroSite BTSs cannot be in the same chain.</p>
</dd>
</dl>

<p>Multi BCF also provides an <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id010415#id010415" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id010415#id010415');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">EDGE</a>
evolution path for site expansion from Nokia Talk-family BTS to Nokia UltraSite
and Nokia MetroSite BTSs.</p>

<p>Multi BCF introduces a new architecture and radio network
object called a segment (<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id013538#id013538" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id013538#id013538');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">SEG</a>), which is essentially the same
as the telecom cell. One SEG may consist of several BTS objects.</p>

<p>Operators can configure BTSs so that TRXs in different
cabinets (operating on the same frequency band) serve the same cell with a
single BCCH. At the BSC, operators use a new SEG object to set all BTS objects
to share the same BCCH. Several BTS objects can belong to one SEG; however,
only one BTS object of the SEG can have BCCH.</p>

<p>The figure <em>Multi BCF configuration example</em>
shows an example of a Multi BCF configuration.</p>

<p>The figure <em>Multi BCF and Common BCCH
principles for EGPRS territories</em> illustrates the Multi BCF and Common
BCCH principles for EGPRS territories. As this figure shows, the TRXs inside
a BTS object must have common capabilities. It is recommended that EDGE-capable
and non EDGE-capable TRXs must be configured so that the BTS objects are separated.
However, it is possible with some restrictions to configure EDGE capable and
non-EDGE capable TRXs to the same EGPRS-enabled or CS3&amp;CS4-enabled BTS
object, if the non-EDGE capable TRX is used only for CS traffic. <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id010416#id010416" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id010416#id010416');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">EGPRS</a>
