<h2>User traffic dimensioning</h2>

<p>It is possible to produce basic guidelines for system traffic
dimensioning on the basis of the factors affecting the data rates experienced
in (E)GPRS applications. It is assumed here that (E)GPRS is introduced to
an existing network without any changes to the configuration or the circuit
switched load.</p>

<p>A system's (E)GPRS capacity can be estimated using the
following procedure:</p>

<ol class="type-odd">
<li type="1"><p>Calculate the number of TRXs in a cell
and hence the number of traffic timeslots (NTCH).</p>
</li>
<li type="1"><p>Calculate the average number of occupied
timeslots in the CS territory for a given blocking level (NCSW).</p>
</li>
<li type="1"><p>Calculate the territory margin overhead
(the average number of free timeslots required in the CS territory) (NTEM).</p>
</li>
<li type="1"><p>Calculate the timeslots available for
(E)GPRS (N(E)GPRS), as follows: </p>

<a name="dec1321550487" shape="rect"></a>
<div>
<img alt="urn:mars:dn02259666:1:en:global:cgm_fixed:data:data" border="0" src="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=dn02259666&amp;edition=1&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=gif&amp;component=data&amp;item=data" /></div>
</li>
</ol>

<p>To consider the level of service experienced by individual
users, multiply N(E)GPRS by a scale factor (for example 0.7) to
give the mean number of used timeslots to provide a suitable level of service
(N(E)GPRS-USED).</p>

<p>To estimate the available (E)GPRS throughput, multiply
N(E)GPRS-USED by the mean cell data rate per timeslot obtained
from the cell C/I distribution and the available coding schemes.</p>
