<h2>Signalling load</h2>

<p>It is possible to implement separate packet and conventional
control channels from GPRS rel.2 (S10.5) onwards. This helps eliminate some
of the issues relating to the division of circuit switched/packet switched
resources occurring with the initial implementation of GPRS.</p>

<p>The signalling load depends on the traffic types – extensive
use of short messaging clearly leads to an increased requirement for a channel
setup resource (<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08933#id08933" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08933#id08933');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">PRACH</a>/<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08926#id08926" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08926#id08926');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">PAGCH</a>).</p>

<p>EGPRS changes the situation somewhat because of the increased
data rates. If the offered user load remains constant, the same number of
users can be supported, and there will be a decrease in the TCH utilisation
because of the increased data rate during a <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id011257#id011257" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id011257#id011257');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">TBF</a>.
If, however, the TCH utilisation remains constant (that is, the traffic load
increases), the demand on the signalling channels is greater, and fewer mobiles
per cell can be supported. It is recommended to run EDGE simulations to aid
the dimensioning.</p>
