<h1>(E)GPRS planning tools </h1>

<p>Nokia's integrated network planning solution, NetAct Planner,
offers support in all phases of the radio network planning process, which
consists of coverage, capacity, and frequency planning for multi-user organisations.
Running on a laptop-compatible PC under Windows NT®, it enables field use.
NetAct Planner provides a common database with Nokia's transmission tools
and drive test analysing tool and direct interfaces with Nokia NetAct and
Configuration Data Warehouse. </p>

<p>Net Act Planner includes the following functionalities:</p>

<li><p>creation of Multi BCF segments and common BCCH allocations</p>
</li>
<li><p>dimensioning of the Dynamic Abis Pools in transmission planning:
the plans created in Planner can be transferred to Radio Access Configurator
(RAC) in a single file</p>

<li><p>capacity planning of GSM and GPRS transmission network (latest
version of NetAct Planner)</p>

<p>Short description of the traffic definition (see figure <em>Input field for EDGE traffic definition</em>):</p>


<ul>
<li><p>In the NetAct Transmission planner
tool it is possible to define whether the TRX is GSM, EDGE, or GPRS capable
by checking <span class="gui-component-sem">EDGE Trx</span> or <span class="gui-component-sem">GPRS
Enabled</span> check boxes.</p>
</li>
<li><p>In the <span class="gui-component-sem">(E)GPRS
Default (TCHs)</span> column it is possible to define how many GPRS TCHs from

by default. These traffic channels can also be used for voice.</p>

<li><p>In the <span class="gui-component-sem">(E)GPRS
Dedicated (TCHs)</span> column, it is possible to define how many (GPRS) TCHs
from the TRXs are connected to PCU in the BSC permanently. These traffic channels
cannot be used for voice traffic.</p>
</li>
<li><p>Av. (E)GPRS Data Rate per TCH (kbps)
describes the average data rate of the packet data traffic channel in kbps
per cell. This value is used with GPRS traffic to determine the average number
of packet data traffic channels in use (number of packet traffic channels
is a limiting factor in the BSC).</p>
</li>
<li><p>GPRS Traffic  (kbps) describes the
total amount of GPRS traffic is coming from the MSs in the cell. This value
is further used to dimension BSC, SGSN and GPRS Core components.</p>

<h2>Planning
process with NetAct planner for E(GPRS) </h2>

<p>In addition to the normal cellular module work order, there
are few steps in the (E)GPRS planning process that you need to be aware of:</p>


<ul>
<li><p>Set the BTS to support GPRS</p>
</li>
<li><p>Create GPRS traffic in the BTS nodes
in the Cellular Module</p>
</li>
<li><p>Check the Gb-interface parameter(s)</p>
</li>
<li><p>Create 2M path structure and import
2M bit-templates for EDGE</p>
</li>
<li><p>Check possible blocking caused by competing
traffic channels with database browser or with the command Tools | ET ports
of the selected nodes in the 2M module.</p>
