EGPRS transmission planning

EDGE BSS transmission needs some specified settings compared
to the GSM or GPRS system because of the new Dynamic Abis dimensioning model
and higher EGPRS data rates. The higher data rates directly affect:

the Abis interface

the Ater interface

the Gb interface

equipment dimensioning.

In the GSM system, each TRX reserves its full capacity
from the Abis interface constantly even if there are no active users in the
radio interface at all. It means that if we know the number of TRXs/BTS, we
can dimension the transmission network.

Capacity calculations of the EDGE transmission network
are more complex compared to the GSM system because depending on the traffic
structure of the radio interface, the structure of the traffic can vary very
much on the Abis, Ater and Gb-interfaces even if the TRX amount is the same.

Voice and CSD traffic goes towards the transcoder via the
Ater interface. Default and dedicated EGPRS traffic goes towards SGSN via
the Gb interface. Dynamic Abis pool (DAP) is used only for PSD, thus it should
be calculated towards SGSN via the Gb interface. Default EGPRS AIR-TCHs are
allocated in the fixed part and in the DAP of the Abis frame. This capacity
should be calculated to be part of the Ater and Gb traffic because the traffic
can be connected either to the transcoder or the SGSN depending on its priority
and usage between CSD/PSD.

Overview of the transmission planning process

The transmission network planning is performed based on
the requirement specifications given by the customer and information provided
by the radio network planning team during the planning process.

Possible tasks related to the transmission planning process
are listed below:

collect dimensioning information from
the radio frequency (RF) planning and/or customer

calculate the required transmission
capacities for each BTS type (UltraSite, MetroSite, Talk) based on the RF
planning results

define the BSC area (together with
the RF and Core planning)

dimension the NEs belonging to the
EDGE BSS

plan the topology (point to point,
chain, loop, mesh)

select the media and technology (copper,
microwave, fiber, leased line, PDH, SDH, ATM, IP)

select the transmission equipment (for
example, DN2, DM2, MetroHub, Fiu19, FXC RRI, FXC E1/T1, Marconi SDH, and other
vendors' equipment)

perform capacity calculations including
future extensions for Abis, Ater, and Gb interfaces and backbone transmission

create timeslot allocation tables for
2M Abis frames

create network drawings related to
traffic routing, connectivity, and network management

create the required cross-connection
files describing traffic settings for different BTS types and transmission
equipment.

BCF/BTS/TRX creation

During the TRX creation process, the user can define whether
or not the Dynamic Abis is used. If the dynamic Abis is used, the operator
must define the pool to be used by the TRX. It must locate on the same PCM
as the TRXsig and fixed traffic timeslots. The Dynamic Abis usage cannot be
modified later. If the operator wants to disable the TRX usage of the the
Dynamic Abis, the TRX must be deleted and created again.

One MetroSite cabinet can contain
one to four transceivers in omni or sectored configuration. It can house any
mix of GSM and EDGE transceivers. It contains only one transmission slot for
FXC or FC cards. Future SW releases will support the chaining of up to three
cabinets for 12-TRX site configurations. Nokia MetroSite supports also High-Speed
Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD), 14.4 kbit/s data rate as well as General Packet
Radio Service (GPRS). You can freely mix GSM and EDGE TRX in a Nokia MetroSite
EDGE BTS to provide a smooth data evolution and optimised flexibility.

Integrated Transmission Units and EGPRS transmission planning

Integrated transmission units can be installed in Nokia
MetroSite GSM/EDGE Base Station, Nokia MetroHub Transmission Node, or Nokia
UltraSite GSM/EDGE Base Station. The transmission units provide E1 or T1 wireline
interfaces, as well as support for Nokia FlexiHopper and MetroHopper microwave
radios. FXC RRI transmission unit enables a connection to two microwave radio
outdoor units via a unique Nokia Flexbus interface. FXC E1 and FXC E1/T1 units
provide either 4x2 Mbit/s (75 or 120 ohm) or 4x1.5 Mbit/s (100 ohm) wireline
interfaces. All FXC cards provide a cross-connect functionality, enabling
grooming, branching, as well as loop protection.
