<h2>EGPRS transmission equipment dimensioning</h2>

<p>Transmission in the existing GSM/GPRS network can be expanded
to EDGE data rates with the use of the existing Plesiosynchronous Digital
Hierarchy (<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id06563#id06563" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id06563#id06563');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">PDH</a>) / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy
(<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id05582#id05582" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id05582#id05582');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">SDH</a>) solutions inherent to Nokia MetroSite EDGE BTS
and Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS.</p>

<p>It is also possible to use the Multi-<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04982#id04982" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04982#id04982');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">BCF</a>
feature to implement co-siting with the Talk-family BTS when the GSM system
is used together with GPRS and EDGE. A Nokia Talk-family base station can
be upgraded to EDGE by installing a Nokia UltraSite GSM Base Station with
EDGE-capable TRXs on the site as an extension cabinet. Site compatibility
is achieved by synchronising the Nokia Talk and Nokia UltraSite BTSs and using
existing antenna and feeder structures. They share a single BCCH (per sector)
and function in the network as a single cell. This site is seen as one object
by the NetAct and the BSC.</p>

<p>EDGE transceivers for MetroSite and UltraSite EDGE Base
Stations will be compatible with GSM transceivers and fit into the same slot
in the BTS cabinets. In addition to EDGE services, the EDGE transceivers will
be fully GSM compatible. They can perform GSM voice, data, HSCSD, GPRS and
EGPRS and are backward compatible with all legacy GSM mobiles.</p>

<p>In the Nokia EDGE solution, switching between GMSK and
8PSK can be done dynamically on a timeslot basis on the same EDGE transceiver.
The link adaptation between GMSK and 8PSK modulations can be done dynamically
during a connection, based on radio conditions. </p>

<p>The figure <em>Transmission interfaces</em> shows a
possible transmission solution configuration.</p>

<h3>Transmission topologies</h3>

<p>Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS solution and Nokia MetroHub enable
the building of transmission hub sites, which are needed for grooming the
traffic and arranging different protections for the network. Nokia UltraSite
EDGE BTS and Nokia MetroHub offer a variety of interfaces with capacity ranging
from E1/T1 2Mbps / 1.5Mbps to 16x2Mbps.</p>

<p>All network topologies (point-to-point, star, loop) and their combinations
are supported in EDGE, although certain modifications are required. In addition,
various media (radio-link, wire-line, and fibre-optic) as well as node file
based commissioning is supported. </p>

<p>The DAP related TCHs and TRX-SIGs must be on the same E1/T1 Abis all
the route. Because each 2M Abis frame is divided in two parts, a fixed part
and a dynamic pool, the configurations require some specified settings. The
fixed part of the 2M frames can be configured as in GSM by using B-type connections
for chain or star topologies, or a Y-type when creating loop protections.</p>

<p>Nokia products such as MetroSite, MetroHub, and UltraSite
are compatible with FXC and FC cards. The FXC and FC units like FXC RRI, FXC
E1/T1 can handle the DAP traffic and the necessary cross-connection types.</p>

<p>In addition, some other nodes like DN2, DB2, TRU (A-H)
support the necessary cross-connections functionalities.</p>
