Overview of Intelligent Shutdown

Intelligent Shutdown is application software in the Base
Station Controller (BSC). It is used for minimising the BTS site power consumption
and optimise the service level if the mains power fails.

BTS site power consumption depends on the service level
which the BTS site maintains while battery backup is used. By reducing the
service level when the mains has failed the battery backup power can be made
to last longer.

Intelligent Shutdown is available for the following base
stations:

Nokia UltraSite

Nokia MetroSite

Nokia Talk-family

Nokia 2nd generation

Note that the first releases of Nokia UltraSite and Nokia MetroSite
do not necessarily support it. Intelligent Shutdown makes separate activation
of different site types possible.

The battery backup procedure is executed when mains power
goes down at the BTS site. You can define the service level that is to be
applied on mains failure to optimise the trade-off between the service level
and battery power lifetime. As a result, the service level does not have to
be reduced unnecessarily during a short mains break, whereas during a longer
break, the essential functions such as BCCH TRXs or transmission chain are
maintained for as long as possible. The BTS-specific battery options cannot
be set (with MML or Q3) without the corresponding option.

When the mains power returns to the BTS site, the BSC orders
the BTS site to power the equipment that was shut down and to return to full
service level.
