Overview of Mobile Location Services

Mobile Location Services allow a GSM subscriber to be positioned
with a certain Quality of Service. Positioning may be initiated by the subscriber,
the network, or an external party utilising the Mobile Positioning Function.

Positioning is subject to various restrictions based on,
for example, capability, security, and service profiles. Mobile Location Services
allow the location of a GSM mobile station (MS) to be determined at any time
whilst the MS is within the radio coverage area of the GSM HPLMN or VPLMN.
Important applications of Mobile Location Services are, for example:

Government Applications

Operator Applications

Commercial Services

This document covers the following Mobile Location Services:
CI+TA and conventional GPS location methods.

From these location methods CI+TA is fast, light-weight,
and does not need location support in the MS. Conventional GPS is more accurate
than CI+TA, but it is slower and requires GPS in the MS.

Different mobile locationing methods have different benefits
and drawbacks. No single method is suitable for all applications.

For more information on Mobile Location Services, see Location Services in BSC in BSC/TCSM Product Documentation
Set.
