Receiver Diversity

Receiver diversity can be used to minimise local drops
in the RF field strength. These drops are caused by multi-path propagation,
and can reduce the quality of the received signal, especially when the MS
is near the cell border.

The principle of spatial diversity is to use two antennas
for received signals. The antennas are placed physically apart so that the
correlation between received signals is minimised. This way it is probable
that when one receiver branch suffers a field drop, the other is able to receive
a signal with sufficient quality. The two separate paths are then processed
in the baseband section of the BTS transceiver. A post detection weighted
summing method is used to combine the signals of the two branches.

In the Nokia 2nd generation, diversity may be configured
on a TRX basis to the OMU HW database (diversity on/off field per CU). This
enables the user to have diversity in one sector while other sectors operate
without diversity.

In the Nokia Talk-family, the use of diversity can be selected
on a sector basis into the HW database.

The use of receiver diversity in the Nokia PrimeSite can
be configured by the hardware database. Receiver diversity is available on
the Nokia Talk-family and PrimeSite basic configuration.
