Fast Moving MS Handling in Macro Cell

The Fast Moving MS Handling in a Macro Cell is a feature
designed to handle the fast moving handheld mobile stations (MS) in macro
cells and provide better service for subscribers in a 2-layer or multilayer
microcellular network.

The network operator can define the adjacent cells to three
different layers from the serving cell's point of view:

Lower layer

Same layer

Upper layer.

These layer definitions can be used to direct MSs in hierarchical
network as low as it is meaningful. The suitable layer selection can be based
on the MS relative speed in an underlying lower level cell.

Several micro cells are embedded in macro cell’s areas,
and they are defined as adjacent cells to the macro cell. When a macro cell
serves an MS, it moves through the coverage area of the micro cells and starts
receiving a signal from an adjacent micro cell. After operator defined time
(when the MS is in the coverage area of the adjacent micro cell) if the signal
level of the adjacent micro cell exceeds the minimum signal level (defined
per adjacent cell) and the adjacent micro cell is lower layer cell, the MS
is handed over to the micro cell.
