Overview of EGPRS planning

Packet data services might change the traditional cellular
network planning because of as yet unknown parameters such as high traffic
profiles. In the following paragraphs, the potential impacts on the radio
aspects are studied based on the current understanding.

From a network operator’s point of view, the viability
of EDGE deployment depends on the coverage levels and how they compare with
the existing speech and GPRS services. Improved software functionality, including
DSP algorithms, was implemented in BSC release S9 in order to minimise the
impact of the signal-to-noise requirement and to aid EDGE deployment in the
existing sites.

Coverage planning, frequency planning and capacity analysis
impact each other, because coverage and TSL capacity for, for example, MCS-9
is interference-dependent. In addition, indoor EGPRS service with required
capacity can be achieved only in case of high enough fieldstrength.

The rural environment is typically noise-limited since
relaxed frequency re-use is common. Planning in this case is primarily concerned
with the system link-budget.

The successful implementation of Nokia EDGE depends on finding the appropriate
settings for a number of parameters. Some of the most important ones relate
to cell (re)selection criteria, Link Adaptation, QoS, and other such techniques.

EGPRS service activation

In the initial roll-out phase of EGPRS deployment, the
operator may have a lack of EDGE-capable BTSs. The operator may not want to
enable EGPRS service in all EDGE supporting BTSs or TRXs. The operator may
plan the network so that re-use of certain frequencies is very tight and EGPRS
service may not be applicable on those frequencies.

A BTS-object level parameter EGPRS Enabled
can be used to enable/disable EDGE. At TRX level the functionality can be
handled with the existing parameter GPRS Enhabled.
If the GPRS Enhabled parameter is set off, neither
GPRS nor EGPRS is allowed on the TRX.

If the concept of a Segment is utilised, an EDGE-capable
BTS can carry only EGPRS traffic if the GPRS Enhabled
parameter (upgraded to segment level) is set on.
