Supervision of Transmission Equipment

The DX 200 Base Station Controller (BSC) system provides
real-time supervision of transmission equipment - the transcoder unit, submultiplexer,
dynamic node, supervisory substation, base band modem, and digital microwave
radio link. Other transmission equipment, for example optical line equipment,
can be supervised by the common name Transmission Equipment (TE).

The Base Transceiver Station supervises the transmission
equipment at a BTS site, the Base Station Interface Equipment and the Transmission
Unit. Depending on the configuration, the digital microwave radio links and
Baseband Modems (BBM) can be supervised either by the BTS or the BSC.

The operation principle of the supervision is a master-slave
system based on polling. ‘Polling’ commands are transferred from the master
to the transmission equipment through Q1 service channel. If the status of
the polled equipment is not acceptable, a longer dialogue is started. The
master obtains more detailed information on the fault situation, sets the
appropriate alarm and, if necessary (in Transcoder faults), blocks the faulty
circuit. The alarms are printed locally and transferred to the Operation and
Maintenance Centre (NetAct) through the Operation and Maintenance (O&M)
network.

Supervision
of transmission units by other manufacturers (Nokia MetroSite and Nokia UltraSite)

If non-Nokia transmission equipment is supervised via External
Alarm and Control (EAC) lines, alarms can be sent to two possible destinations:
either the BSC and the NetAct or the NetAct.

When the alarms are sent to BSC and NetAct, the BOI (in
the case of the Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS) or a master TRX (in the case of
the Nokia MetroSite BTS) supervise the alarm handling and alarms are reported
as normal external alarms.

When alarms are sent to NetAct, the NetAct performs supervision,
and the master TRX (Nokia MetroSite BTS) or BOI (Nokia UltraSite BTS) directs
the alarm to the transmission unit as the EAC lines become active. During
the next poll request of the NetAct, the alarm will be reported as a transmission
unit alarm.

The functionality described above is implemented by defining
a new parameter for each external alarm. The parameter defines whether the
alarm is reported as a normal external alarm or whether it is treated as an
external alarm that has been passed through to transmission units (and further
to the NetAct).
