You put a host into maintenance mode when you need to perform maintenance or service on it.

Virtual machines that are running on a host entering maintenance mode must either be shut down or migrated to another host. If a host is part of a DRS-enabled cluster in fully automated mode, virtual machines are migrated to other hosts in the cluster.

You cannot power on virtual machines or deploy new virtual machines on a host while it is in maintenance mode.

Required privilege: Host.Configuration.Maintenance on the host.

1

Select the host in the inventory.

2

Click the All Actions icon (Show all actions) and select Configuration > Enter Maintenance Mode.

3

(Optional) If the host is part of a cluster, select Move powered off and suspended virtual machines to other hosts in the cluster to move powered off and suspended virtual machines to other hosts in the cluster.

When you move these virtual machines to other hosts, you can power them on and work with them while the original host is in maintenance mode.

4

Click Yes.

When all virtual machines on the host are powered off or migrated, the host enters maintenance mode.
