A shut down operation uses VMware tools to perform a graceful shutdown of a guest operating system in a virtual machine. This means that critical operations, such as writing data to disk, are allowed to complete, and the guest operating system is shut down before the virtual machine is powered off.

In certain situations, such as when VMware Tools is not installed or the guest operating system is not responding, shut down might not succeed and using the Power Off option is necessary.

Ensure that VMware Tools is installed in the virtual machine.

Required privilege: Virtual machine.Interaction.Power Off on the virtual machine.

1

Select a virtual machine.

In the virtual machines and templates inventory tree, select a group of virtual machines and select a virtual machine from the list on the right.

Search for a virtual machine and select it from the search results list.

2

Right-click the virtual machine and select Power > Shut Down Guest.

The guest operating system shuts down, and then the virtual machine is powered off.
